What Fish Are Biting In Cabo San Lucas?

As we like to say here, “Fishing Cabo San Lucas is either good or great”, but are you wondering just exactly what we’re catching lately? We’ll be sharing what’s biting and what you can expect during this time of year when you go fishing in Cabo San Lucas.

Striped Marlin

Spring is a great time to get bit by Cabo’s year-round mainstay, the striped marlin. Last week we had success right outside of the bay, where we came across a ton of striped marlin with a strong bite. Once we got trolling, the marlin quickly took notice and gave us a strong bite and started fighting hard. Most of our charters released striped marlin, with our Picante Dream releasing six in a day.

Yellowtail

This week we had plenty of good luck with yellowtail on the Sea of Cortez side. Several of our charters got the yellowtail biting, catching three or more throughout the day! Early spring is typically a hot time for yellowtail, and we expect to see more in the coming weeks as they come to Cabo in search of squid. Their aggressive personality, speed, and strength make them a sought after species here in Baja.

Skipjack

At some of our favorite inshore fishing spots, we ran into some nice skipjack. The inshore bite has been consistently good this week, and a large number have shown up with their big appetite. Known for their agility, the skipjack is a fun catch, and most our charters ended up bringing in several.

What’s Biting Next?

We typically expect to see more awesome striped marlin as we head into April, as well as plenty of inshore fishing opportunities. Dorado, skipjack, roosterfish, sierra, and wahoo are likely to be biting in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned as we’ll be covering more of the fishing that can be found here in May, June, and into the summer months.

It’s our 25th year in Cabo’s and we’re not slowing down! If you’re ready to experience some of the best fishing in beautiful Cabo San Lucas, click or call so we can help you plan your trip. Wind:O 2 mph

Today’s Date:March 25, 2019

Daily Fishing Report:

We are so happy to report that the fishing has been better since my last report. The water is little more warmer, and we’ve had some action days.

Tuna

We’ve been finding tuna in both sides, Sea of Cortez by La Ballena around 25 miles out , and on the Pacific side by San Jaime Bank around 35 miles out. Some days have been better than others but overall the tuna fishing has been consistently good over the past few months and it will continue to be good all summer.

Most fish are weighing between 20 and 45 pounds. We’ve been most successful with the kite but chumming is also working well. Most boats are getting between 4-8 strikes per day.

Striped Marlin

The marlin fishing has also improved since my last report. We’re finding striped marlin in various spots but we’ve had the most luck 10-15 miles around the lighthouse. We’ve had the most success trolling live but bait and casting live bait when we see them on the surface. The marlin fishing conditions will continue to get better and better for the next few months, and I expect we will start seeing black marlin very soon.

Dorado and Wahoo

We were also starting to see a few dorados and some wahoos. Most boats are getting 1 some days in a different spots. Most are weighing between 10-20 pounds but we’ve also found a few big bull wahoo in deeper water, and we’ve had the most luck with lures, and live bait.

Inshore Fishing

Apart from the good and improving offshore conditions there has also been some really good inshore fishing. There’s a few red snapper, rooster fish, jacks, and mackerel. So if you’re not wanting to try your luck offshore, you can definitely have some fun within the bay or just off the point.

Summary

The fishing conditions have definitely improved considerably over the past month. The water is warmer,  and there is a lot more bait in the area. The fishing is a little above average for this time of year, we’re having a lot of fun out there, and I expect things to keep getting better over the next few months.

Striped Marlin Fishing in Cabo San Lucas

The striped marlin are kings of the ocean, and use their intelligence as well as strength to thrive as the apex predator. The primary feeding technique used by striped marlin is piercing through schools of smaller fish. The deadly combination of strength and strategy make them a formidable force to be reckoned with. It’s what makes them a highly prized game fish, with their fight on display when the tables turn and their defensive prowess engaged. They are one of the top prized catches of Cabo San Lucas.

About Striped Marlin

The striped marlin is in the billfish family, whose common features can include sharp bill (upper jaw) in front, long body, and large size. Cabo San Lucas is a hot spot for striped marlin, as well as blue marlin, black marlin, and other billfish like sailfish. While black marlin and blue marlin concentrate from spring through fall, striped marlin are abundant the rest of the time. Striped marlin are present in Cabo year round, at their best from November through May, and are the only marlin available from January through April.

Why do they Love Cabo?

Cabo San Lucas is the ideal environment for striped marlin. They are found in the Pacific, and enjoy the temperature of the water off Cabo San Lucas. Striped marlin are a migratory fish, and begin their journey in the central Pacific. Spawning does not occur in Cabo, but adults are found in here in high numbers, implying that there are better feeding opportunities than elsewhere. Indeed, the striped marlin benefit from Cabo’s nutrient rich ecosystem that supports smaller fish like sardines, mackerel, and squid, which they can consistently rely on for sustenance.

The Angling Technique

Due to their strength and size, heavy gear is required to contend with the striped marlin. Live bait is often used on a long line while trolling slowly. Since striped marlin are found sleeping or hunting near the surface, sight casting can be the quickest way to target them. Look for their dorsal fin or tail, and throw some bait their way.

Using a fighting belt is recommended, because the strength and persistence of the striped marlin can be very powerful, and you may end up battling it out with a big one. The striped marlin is prized for their strength, agility, and acrobatics. They are not one to back down from a fight, and will wear their opponent down by running away and leaping into the air.

Cabo San Lucas is the “Marlin Capital of the World”, and the proof is in the striped marlin fishing found here. They are one of the most exciting fish in the sea. Their fight is unmatched, their strength is what makes them the top of the chain in the ocean, and shows when on the line. Their jumps are not only spectacular, it makes them even harder to contend with. They are impressive not only during a fight, but up close as well. If you’re lucky enough to get near one, you won’t soon forget it.

Cabo Fishing in March

Fishing Cabo San Lucas? March is a great time to visit Cabo, and experience the ultimate thrill of a deep sea fishing adventure. Read on to learn more about the type of fishing that’s expecting this time of year.

Cabo San Lucas is beautiful in March, and is a popular time to visit for a number of reasons. In the water, you can experience incredible whale watching, snorkeling, and of course, top tier fishing. The skies are clear and the water is beginning to warm up as winter turns to spring. Between ideal weather conditions and tons of action waiting in the ocean, March is a great time to go fishing in Cabo San Lucas.

These are three of the top catches for the month of March:

Striped Marlin

Striped marlin are as good as ever in the month of March. We’re lucky to have marlin fishing year round, and while black and blue marlin recede from January into spring, Striped Marlin are at their best. Striped marlin peak in the fall, and are excellent well into the spring, making them a top choice for Cabo fishing in March.

One of our preferred fishing spots is the Finger Banks, located 50 miles northwest of Cabo San Lucas. It is arguably the best location in the world for striped marlin fishing, because it is a favored tidal zone that they can&rsquot resist. There is the potential to catch double digits and get tons of action with so many in one place. Hit the water with some live bait and the eager striped marlin will show their interest fast.

Yellowfin Tuna

We see yellowfin tuna year round in Cabo San Lucas, and if you know where to go it can be excellent in March. The yellowfin are a schooling species, forming based on size. Since they are very sociable, other tuna, such as skipjack and bigeye can be found traveling with yellowfin. They are also known to associate with spotted dolphin, so if you see a pod, there is likely a school of yellowfin close by.

The best place to go fishing for yellowfin tuna is on the Pacific side of the peninsula. The San Jaime Bank and Golden Gate Bank are some of the best places for many species, and yellowfin tuna are no exception.

Sierra Mackerel

Sierra mackerel are a popular choice for March, as they the enjoy cooler waters of late winter. They are the most available gamefish from Cabo to Central America, and are one of the most commercially fished species in the Pacific. You’ll find large sierra schools close to the surface inshore, feeding on small prey, such as anchovies. They are long and slim, with bright yellow dots, and are typically around one to two feet, maxing out at 39 inches.

Sierra are a challenge because of their keen eyesight they won’t bite if they detect a line, so you have to use light wire. On the flip side, their sharp teeth can easily break through a line, so getting one hooked can be tricky. Be prepared for the sierra’s speed and fight, as they are an aggressive species.

Cabo fishing in March is known for excellent striped marlin, and the opportunity to target massive schools of fish on the Pacific side of the peninsula. When you find fish, the action begins and doesn’t let up. The waters are packed with tons of hard fighting striped marlin, tuna, sierra, and more. Come to Cabo in March to experience top tier sportfishing in one of the most beautiful locations in the world.
