All About Cabo Fishing in December

Thinking about coming to Cabo San Lucas in December for some incredible sportfishing? If you’re curious about whats waiting in the water, read on to find out everything you need to know about winter fishing in the Marlin Capital of the World.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Cabo in December, you’re in for some of the best fishing of the year! We’re known for our impressive Marlin, and other big game that bring anglers back here, time and time again. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect from a December fishing trip in Los Cabos.

Marlin

December is a prime month for Striped Marlin and Blue Marlin. These lively giants are a thrill for those who haven’t had the experience, as well as an incredibly popular choice in general. We hook up a ton of them during December, because it’s during the peak season for Striped, as well as a solid month for Blue and even Black Marlin. Many anglers head our way in the winter just to meet up with Cabo’s most famous fish. They are truly spectacular on the line, and unforgettable up close. It isn’t December in Los Cabos without top level Marlin fishing, and you won’t be disappointed if you’re seeking these huge billfish!

Dorado

After Marlin, Dorado is our most popular fish for the month of December. They are high in number this month, and are so much fun to catch. They are one of the most sought after of all gamefish, and when you catch a glimpse of one, you’ll understand why. Many find Dorado to be the most stunning, due to their iridescent green skin. A Dorado’s beauty is unique because their brilliant green skin dulls quickly when brought out of the water, so seeing one in person is a real treat. We have a lot of fun trolling for them, and they can get quite large, which only makes for a more intense fight! December in Cabo San Lucas is made even better thanks to our fantastic Dorado fishing.

Yellowfin Tuna

Cabo San Lucas is a hot spot for Yellowfin Tuna, yielding record breaking catches that tip the scales above 400 pounds! They are BIG here, and are hugely popular, due to their epic fighting prowess and good looks. They will have you on the line for a long time, and keep you on your toes. December is smack in the middle of peak season for Yellowfin, with plenty of nice sized catches throughout the month. They’re always exciting, and you never know just how large one will be until you get it to the surface. Cabo San Lucas is one of the best places in the world to target Yellowfin, and December is an especially favorable time to do so.

December Weather in Cabo

The weather in Cabo San Lucas is notably mild, with little chance of precipitation in the month of December. You couldn’t ask for much better fishing conditions. This month has no chance of a stormy day, so planning a fishing trip for this month is a great choice. While fall is well known for tournaments, December features much of the same high volume and exciting opportunities for big game fishing, with even better weather.

We hope you’re excited to hit the water this December! Fishing in Cabo San Lucas is incredible year round, and December is excellent because of big game and awesome weather. Whether you’ve got your sights set on Marlin, Dorado, of Yellowfin, the Sea of Cortez has plenty to offer all anglers who visit.

Whale Watching in Cabo San Lucas

Whale watching is one of the most exciting things to do in Cabo San Lucas!

Our whale watching season begins in December, and goes through the spring. This is when the whales are migrating north from Antarctica. Gray Whales, Humpback Whales, and Bottlenose Dolphins are frequently spotted as they rest and feed in the waters off Los Cabos.

Whales can often be elusive, and require a keen eye to spot. Here are the main ways you’ll be able to spot whales and have a good time in Cabo San Lucas!

What to look for

You’ll be able to see them above the water as they move about. When they “breach” they leap up into the air, and flip back down making quite a splash in the process. It’s a spectacular sight, and Humpback one of the most likely whales to make a jump. No final consensus has been made about the reason for the whale’s behavior. Speculation that it is for communication, hunting, or cleaning themselves are some of the theories.

Another way to spot them is by looking for “lobtailing”. This is the action of tail-slapping the surface of the water, which causes a loud clap. This is common in the whales of Cabo San Lucas, as well as the dolphins here. Some evidence shows that, at least in Humpbacks, lobtailing is a means of stunning their prey to increase their chances of successful hunting.

Keep your eyes peeled for “logs” when you’re whale watching. Humpbacks are known to sleep close to the surface so they can sleep and breathe at the same time, without having to travel from the depths. All whales sleep with half of their brain at a time, while the other half is responsible for breathing. “Logging” can be identified when you spot a dorsal fin sticking out of the water, and not moving.

If a whale pops up above the surface vertically, it’s “spyhopping”. It happens when  they become curious about something and wants to check it out. They come out of the water like this so they can use their eyes (and ears, in the Gray Whale) to evaluate surface objects. They are known to skyhop to get a better look at whale watching boats, and if you’re lucky, they might hang out for a while.

Picante has knowledgable captains available to take you out for a day of incredible whale watching. Get in touch to book your trip today!

Daily Fishing Report:

Fishing in Los Cabos is always incredible and we have a lot productive fishing spots off the coast of Cabo San Lucas – on both the Pacific and Sea of Cortez sides of the Cape. But we are going to mention the top fishing spots in Los Cabos: the famous San Jaime and Golden Gate banks, the Cabrillo Seamount, the 1150, the 45ft and closer to port, Santa Maria, San Lucas Canyons and Los Arcos.

One more piece of information will help you plan your time out the water… and that’s our Fishing Calendar Chart. It gives you a month by month, species by species calendar with the best times of the year to target certain game fish. It’s pretty darned accurate as we’ve tuned it in over the course of decades of fishing in Los Cabos. Even then, don’t be surprised if you find yourself hooked up to a bruiser swordfish in the summer or a yellowfin tuna in the early Spring. That’s just how Los Cabos is full of fish and surprises!

The best bait/lure was the caballito bait and makarell bait, but the artificial are doing their fair share of catching too, as the fish are extraordinarily eager as they come into the trolling patterns.
